UniPDF is a document conversion utility that produces high-quality Word, HTML, plain-text, and image files out of PDF documents. It supports batch conversion, so that it can convert large numbers of files into one of the available output formats in a single operation. UniPDF can create both DOC and RTF documents, as well as image files in most widely used formats (such as JPG, BMP, TIFF, PNG, and GIF).
Not all PDF files can be successfully converted into a text-searchable Word or HTML document, simply because some of them are stored as a collection of images (scanned documents that have not been OCRed fall into this category). UniPDF does not include any OCR functionality, so do not expect searchable text from UniPDF when converting image-based PDF files into text-based formats such as HTML or Word. It is not the program’s fault – it is just the way it is. If the PDF file, however, is text-searchable (use Adobe Reader or Acrobat Pro to check this), then the text data is also there, hidden right behind the nice layout. In this case, UniPDF can produce high-quality text-based renditions of the PDF file. The original layout and all the interactive elements in the text will be faithfully reproduced in the Word or HTML file, subject to the limitations of the output format selected. You can convert full documents or specific page ranges.
The program does not allow you to mix output formats when batch-converting PDF files. Thus, the output format selected will be applied to all the files on the conversion list. No settings will allow you to customize the quality of the output when converting into a DOC or RTF file. When outputting to image formats, though, you are allowed to select a preferred image resolution and the number of colors. Not much, but it is better than nothing.
UniPDF is a free and efficient tool – it lacks the features and the sophistication of commercial, full-fledged PDF converters, but it produces the expected results in a convenient and straightforward way.
